Location

The case study region is situated in the Eastern part of the provinces of Gelderland and Noord Brabant. It is a flat area with an altitude of 35m. The whole are is Pleistocene covered with podzolic soils and locally gleyic soils in the stream valleys.The landscape is characterized by intensively managed arable dairy systems and horticulture systems. Irrigation is routinely applied in vegetable production (67%). The climate is Atlantic, with a precipitation between 650 and 750 mm yearly.

Number of farms surveyed

A total of 15 farms have been surveyed (12 in OF and 3 in CF).

Main production

Farmland of OF is generally composed of vegetables, cereal crops (wheat, barley, maize) and grasslands, meanwhile CF and 4 OF are specialized on vegetables. 3 OF have also dairy cows with an average milk production of 199,000 litres and one have goats. 4 OF farms raise marginally between 1 and 15 pigs. The OF farms are more diversified.

Farm size

The average size of farms included in the BioBio project is 18 ha. The organic farms (OF) are larger than conventional farms (CF) : 20 ha in OF versus 10 ha in CF. The average parcel size is larger in CF: 2.1 ha in OF versus 2.7 ha in CF.
