Location

The case study area in Hungary is the result of natural phenomena and human activity. Harsh river controls in the 19th century of the Tisza and the Danube rivers resulted in secondary alkaline pusza landscapes. The Homokhatsag is characterized by a great wealth of wildlife related to traditional ranch called 'tanya' farming.

A total of 18 farms have been surveyed, 7 organic and 11 conventional farms.

Main production

Farmland is mainly composed of extensive grasslands (Puszta), 72% of the UAA in organic farms versus 68% in conventional farms and other fodder surfaces. The average yield of the permanent grasslands is estimated to 1.6 tons per ha in organic and conventional farms. The surface of cereals (rye, millet, triticale, maize, sunflower) is generally used to feed the animals and cover less than 10% of the UAA. Rye yields are very low. Cereals are generally cultivated in rotation with temporary grasslands without pesticides and with few mineral fertilizers. Some farms implement catch crops.

Farm size

The average size of farms included in the BioBio project is 170 ha (227 ha in organic farms versus 133 ha in conventional farms). The average size of the parcels is 11 ha in organic and conventional farms.
